If you sell digital goods such as E-books or perhaps even file attachments, at times you might get complaints that the files or the digital goods cannot be opened because certain anti viruses block them.

The first step to go about this situation is to check if the file is infected or not. One such tool that checks and detects for viruses, worms malware or Trojan in any uploaded file is VirusTotal. Virus Total is available online and as the name suggests, it is a virus checker tool. VirusTotal is free to use, to all you need to do is upload your file on to it and it tests the file for present viruses, worms, malware and Trojans in your uploaded file.

Furthermore, you can also check various websites or URLs to find out whether they contain any virus. This is very useful and helpful for bloggers because they usually get warnings that their website can be compromised because of the virus. Therefore, with VirusTotal, you can be relaxed as it quickly scans your files and also websites for viruses.

This tool is very easy to use. All you need to do is go over to their homepage, click on “choose file” to upload your file from the computer. You can add any file up to 128MB and then click on “scan”. The tool will then examine your file along with all the popular anti viruses and then show you the result on the following page with the detected warnings.

However, sometimes even when there is no virus, some anti viruses still block the file. For example, if you upload a file and scan it, the result can show,

Avast anti-virus “PDF:UrlMal-inf [Trj]” error

What this means is that any user who has Avast anti-virus will get a warning and the file will be blocked. Therefore, the PDF probably contains a URL that is blocked by Avast anti-virus.

Usually, a PDF file has many web links & if there is any link that is blocked by Avast, they will block the file access with the warning. This issue could happen with any Word doc or any file that contains a hyperlink to a website that is blocked by Avast database. What you need to do next is head over to the Avast Support and creates a support ticket for yourself. Tell them about the issue you are facing and attatch the file that is blocked or that is showing, PDF: UrlMal-inf [Trj] error when scanned via VirusTotal. After that, all you need to do is waiting until they check it and unblock it for you.

Another thing you can do is check all the links on the file one by one by scanning through either VirusTotal or the Avast Scanner and see which one is actually giving trouble. Once that is identified, you can let the website owner know, they will get through Avast or you could check through the Avast support center and wait for them to check and unblock the links.

It’s really not that difficult once you get the hang of it.
